Fires are frightening for everyone, living with others means you need to have a plan in place before any type of disaster can occur. This includes preventative measures as well as what to do in the actual event of a fire. Below we have included some of the ways you can stay safe from fires in your home.
Test fire alarms and change fire alarm batteries frequently- press the test button on your fire alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly. If they are not, do not wait to replace them.
Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen- it is a fact that most fires begin in the kitchen, make sure to keep an up to date fire extinguisher rated for grease and kitchen fires near by.
Blow out candles- never leave a lit candle unattended, always blow them out before leaving even for a few minutes.
Keep it clean- make sure you avoid clutter in the way of exits as well as near any heat sources as this can feed a potential fire. Throw away trash, and remove flammable materials from inside if possible.
Do not overload outlets- make sure you do not have too many things plugged into your outlets. Electrical fires can happen while you are not home and cause serious fires.
Plan how to get out- make an escape plan for you and anyone else living in your home, plan ahead to get you and your family out. Knowing what to do before can help dramatically.
Be aware- finally, if you see or smell smoke coming from your home call 911 right away.
